Health Benefits of Coffee and Tea

After water, coffee and tea are the two most commonly enjoyed drinks. From your morning wake up call, to your cozy nighttime ritual these beverages are yummy and helpful – they are full of beneficial properties too!

Many people cannot function without their morning cup of coffee or tea, and that may because of the caffeine contents in these beverages. Tea leaves contain more caffeine than coffee beans, but brewed coffee has more caffeine than tea… how is that possible you ask. Well, it is because coffee is a stronger drink, more coffee is extracted during the process than tea. Still don’t believe me? The truth is in the cup – you can see through a cup of tea more than a cup of coffee.

Although coffee has higher content of caffeine than tea, caffeine levels can vary a lot due to the coffee bean or tea leaf. Coffee usually has between 95 and 200 milligrams of caffeine while black tea contains 14 to 70 milligrams and green tea has between 24 and 45 milligrams. Typically, tea has a lower amount of caffeine which is why you may have to drink 2 or 3 cups to get the same energy boost as coffee.

Tea is also rich in L – theanine, a powerful antioxidant that stimulates your brain. But unlike caffeine this type of antioxidant may provide stress relieving effects. Studies have suggested habitual tea consumption is considered to promote an overall healthy lifestyle.

Both coffee and tea contain caffeine, vitamins, minerals and polyphenols which are antioxidants that help fight your body against free radicals. This is important because free radicals can negatively impact your body such as damage cells and can lead to serious disease or illness. Tea contains two types of polyphenol antioxidants called catechins and epicatechins, these molecules have both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that benefit the body.

There are no major harmful affects of coffee and tea, maybe just the occasional jitters if you have too much caffeine. This happens because caffeine directly affects the central nervous system so by consuming too much caffeinated coffee and tea it can cause symptoms such as jitters, anxiety and/or shaky hands. On the other hand, if you are trying to decrease the amount of coffee and tea you drink, you might experience headaches, irritability and drowsiness due to the sudden decline of caffeine you are having. You may have these symptoms because caffeine causes the blood vessels in the brain to constrict, which slows the blood flow. When you are reducing or stopping the intake of caffeine the blood vessels open and it increases the blood flow to the brain and the sudden change of oxygen flow causes the symptoms.

Enjoy coffee and tea either hot or on ice but be careful with the added flavors and sugars. Fancy coffee shops offer doctored syrups, sweeteners, and milks that add up to a lot of calories that a meal should provide.
